Student with meningitis dies in San Diego
A school administrator says an 18-year-old San Diego State University student has died from meningitis.
Eric Rivera, the school's vice president of student affairs, says freshman Sara Stelzer died early Friday.
She was admitted to a hospital Tuesday after reporting a flu-like illness.
On Thursday the county Health and Human Services Agency said the previously healthy woman, who lived on campus, may have exposed others to the bacteria between Oct. 5 and Oct. 14.
The university has alerted students to common symptoms, such as fever, intense headaches, lethargy and stiff necks. The bacteria can be spread through sharing drinking glasses, eating utensils, cigarettes or water bottles.
Rivera says the school will offer counseling to students.
