Abbott Laboratories Inc. said Wednesday that the Food and Drug Administration has approved a blood test that measures a person's vitamin D levels.
The test runs on Abbott's Architect platform.
The National Institutes of Health says vitamin D is required for the regulation of calcium and phosphorous and it is important in keeping bones healthy. The vitamin is used to treat bone weakness and pain and for conditions including high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
People typically get most of their vitamin D through exposure to sunlight.
Shares of Abbott Laboratories rose $1.15, or 2.2 percent, to $54.20, trailing a broader rise in the markets Wednesday afternoon.
