Growing New Bones without a Human Body

Ryan Bushey, Associate Editor

EpiBone is a small startup in Harlem specializing in a unique method, which allows patients to “grow their own bone.” The company utilizes a small bioreactor to produce autologous bone grafts made from data collected by CT scans as well as stem cells gathered from the patient.

EpiBone’s website [1] says its process “is strategically positioned to provide a superior bone graft that will provide exact defect repair, a simplified surgical procedure, improved bone formation and regeneration, and shorter recovery times.”

The startup was recently mentioned [2] as one of the investments that belongs to a non-profit investment fund started by Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel.

EpiBone founders Nina Tandon and Sarindr Bhumiratanaare featured in the video below discussing how they grow bone samples in their lab.
