Luna Innovations Inc. said Friday it extended an agreement to develop and supply sensory systems used in Intuitive Surgical Inc.'s robotic surgery devices.
Luna did not disclose terms of the deal. The company said it makes a shape-sensing system that can be used to help surgeons guide the da Vinci robots inside a patient's body. The companies began collaborating in June 2007, but their original agreement expired in December.
In afternoon trading, shares of the Roanoke, Va., company jumped 52 cents, or 20 percent, to $3.14, after setting an annual high of $3.39 earlier in the session.
Intuitive Surgical, of Sunnyvale, Calif., makes the da Vinci Surgical System. It is used in surgeries on the heart, prostate, uterus, and other organs. Its shares fell 93 cents to $309.74.
