Chromosomal translocation of ABL oncogene, which maps to chromosome band 9q34., leads to malignant transformation as seen in CML (chronic myelogenous leukemia). The main partner gene involved in the ABL translocation is BCR, located on chromosome 22. The translocations involving the ABL gene are found in >95;% of CML, 25% of adult ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 5% of childhood ALL, 1% of AML (acute myeloid leukemia) and very rarely in lymphoma. The deletion of the chromosomal material centromeric to the chromosome 9 breakpoint is detected in 5-10% of CML cases. Study has shown that ABL deletion has a negative prognostic value in CML patients. Zymed's SPOT-Light® CISH BCR/ABL translocation probe pair is an alterative to time consuming cytogenetic analysis and is easy to use with CISH (chromogenic in situ hybridization) or FISH.
