In many life science labs, a successful experiment depends on careful and accurate treatment of cell cultures. Cell culturing is supported in great deal by a reliable bioreactor and accompanying accessories. As the following bioreactor systems show, current laboratory trends are demanding simplified, single-use bioreactor systems and accessories that can accommodate the growing use of 3-D cell cultures as well as execute standard cell culturing procedures.
Single-use Bioreactor System Enhances Cell Culture Performance
Pall Corporation XRS 20 Bioreactor System has unique agitation properties that incorporate a single-use, easy-to-use Allegro 3-D biocontainer. This next-gen “rocker” bioreactor is designed for cultivation of mammalian cells in suspension culture, but is equally suitable for applications ranging from general life sciences research to seed train operations and full Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production at the 2-to-20 liter scale. The system also includes a fully enclosed XRS 20 platform with interlock, to provide operator safety while protecting sensitive media components from light.
Bioreactor for Non-invasive Measurements
Sartorius Stedim Biotech UniVessel SU is a single-use stirred tank bioreactor that can be operated in a choice of working volumes ranging from 0.6L to 2L. The bioreactor is suitable for the cultivation of mammalian cells, including stem cells, insect and plant cells and can be used interchangeably with glass vessels to help laboratories better manage peak workloads despite challenging timelines. Each bioreactor is also equipped with integrated single-use sensors for pH and dissolved oxygen measurement.
Airlift Bioreactor Simplifies Cell Culture, Fermentation
Cellexus CellMaker single-use, disposable bioreactor system applies an inexpensive state-of-the-art airlift methodology designed to simplify cell culture and fermentation in bioresearch, scale-up, production and manufacturing. The systems apply optimal aeration mixing and precise temperature control to accelerate and simplify bioprocesses with users of the system routinely reporting improved kLa values (oxygen transfer coefficient per unit volume) and higher OD levels than with batch fed bioreactors. The system uses the single-use CellexusBag, which is a unique cell culture bioreactor bag designed for rapid set-up and optimization of cell culture and fermentation processes under clean, sterile conditions without cross-contamination.
Serum Replacement High Density Cell Culture
FiberCell Systems Inc. CDM-HD is a chemically defined, protein free, cGMP compliant serum replacement that permits any basal medium such as DMEM or RPMI to be used without serum. The serum replacement is designed for the culture of cells at high density, permitting growth in a simplified medium. It is the first serum replacement optimized for hollow fiber bioreactors and other high density cell culture systems.
