Student volunteers from Manchester are hoping to cash in thanks to a national competition.
Student Action, based in the University of Manchester Students Union, is in the running to scoop a £10,000 community award - but they need some help.
Secretary Emily Booth explains: “We are one of a number of charities to be nominated, but the cash prize goes to the team with the highest number of online votes.
“If we win, all of the money would be reinvested to help us not only fund our established projects, but also to enable students to set up new volunteering opportunities, which would benefit the local community. We’re hoping to attract as many votes as possible from staff, students and the people of Manchester!”
Student Action provides volunteering opportunities to allow students to give something back to Manchester. They have 20 existing projects which include providing support services for homeless people in the city centre, organizing social activities for the elderly and working alongside young adults with learning disabilities.
Emily said: “This year we were also able to set up two new projects, including the Bike Project, which recycles abandoned bicycles around the campus. We’ve also started a Student Clean-up in Platt Fields Park once a month.”
Emily believes that students can enrich their time at the University by volunteering and “breaking out of the student bubble.”
Student Action have two weeks left to drum up support for their campaign to clinch the £10,000 jackpot and win the ‘Crème of Nature Community Award’.
