Some of the world’s leading economists are to discuss ways to alleviate the devastating effects of the world recession on developing countries this week.
Coordinated by Kunal Sen, Professor of Development Economics and Policy at The University of Manchester, speakers include Professor Alan Winters, DFID’s Chief Economist and Duncan Green, Oxfam’s Head of Research.
Also speaking are Professor Graciela Kaminsky, a leading scholar on economic crisis, and Professor Duncan Thomas, the President of BREAD, the internationally known research network for development economics.
Dr. Andrew Mold,a senior economist from the OECD and Dr Augustine Fosu, Deputy Director of the UN University’s WIDER programme will also contribute to the event on 21 and 22 January.
The conference is organised by the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM), and Department of Economics, all at The University of Manchester
It is supported by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Development Studies Association.
Professor Sen said: “The financial crisis of 2007-2009 has been the most significant economic downturn in advanced market economies since the Great Depression.
“While we know a great deal about the effects of the crisis on developed countries we know surprisingly little about its impact on developing countries.
“We shall be investigating the nature of the crisis, how it has impacted on global poverty and ways that developing countries can respond.
“Our distinguished panel of economists will throw some important light on these issues.”
